HIPEAC STUDENT CHALLENGE IN EDINBURGH

Martin Maritsch and Kevin Winter (Area Knowledge Discovery) participated in a Student Challenge organized by the HiPEAC (European Network on High Performance and Embedded Architecture and Compilation) consortium. On the topic 'AI for Humanity', they submitted their work with the title 'Mining Call Detail Records to understand Cross-border Refugee Movements', which was accepted by the jury for presentation at the Computing Systems Week Spring 2019 in Edinburgh.

In their work, the two researchers describe how they want to use telecommunication data to estimate parameters that should help to understand refugee movements. For example, based on the anonymized telephone behaviour of a large number of individuals, it should be determined, how refugees behave on their way and how fast they move. Furthermore, models could be built based on the historical data which are capable of estimating conflict probabilities for specific crisis regions in real-time.
